Community Grants

Tasman District Council allocates community grants from rates annually. Applications open 1 May, close 31 July each year. Six funding categories: events (up to $1,500), community programmes ($1,000), social services ($1,250), environment ($1,500), emergency services ($1,000), and sport/recreation facilities (up to $5,000). Council estimates $3 to $5 return for every $1 spent. Also operates a Waste Minimisation Projects Grant for initiatives that reduce waste, support circular economy, and demonstrate kaitiakitanga of natural resources (applications via tasman.govt.nz, rounds close 31 March typically). A Special Grants Fund is available for projects that fall outside standard categories. Priority given to projects addressing identified community need, aligning with council community outcomes, joining communities together, and not solely reliant on council funding.
Catchment Enhancement Fund
Offers financial support and expert advice to landowners and catchment groups working to improve freshwater health and Te Mana o te Wai in Tasman.
Creative Communities Scheme
Funding to increase participation in community arts initiatives.
Golden Bay Community Board Discretionary Fund
$500
Provides low-level funding towards projects, events, and initiatives in the Golden Bay Community Board area.
Heritage Building Restoration Initiatives Fund
$500-$1000
Grants of up to $500 for specified restoration work on heritage-listed buildings and up to $1000 for large earthquake strengthening projects.
Op-shop Subsidy Grants
$600
Grants of up to $600 are available to Opportunity/Charitable Shops to help cover their waste disposal costs.
Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund
Helps with travel costs for rural sports clubs and rural school teams to participate in local sports competitions for young people aged 5-19.
Waste Minimisation Grant for Schools, Early Childhood Education and Community Groups

Grants to support waste minimisation activities in Tasman schools, early childhood centres and community organisations.
Waste Minimisation Grants for Community Events
$750
Grants of up to $750 to help reduce waste at community events and raise awareness of recycling, recovery, and composting.
Waste Minimisation Projects Grant
$5000 or greater
Grants to support waste minimisation projects that aim to reduce waste in the Tasman region.
